Lighting Design: Balancing Aesthetics and Functionality
The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority relocated their office to Hong Kong’s new Arts Hub sitting alongside the cities famous Victora Harbour. The Grade A covers 7 floors, with 70,000sqft office space, meeting facilities with executive floor, and spaces for conference and live media functions. The office design followed local Green Building Standards – “Beam Plus achieving Platinum”, improving the quality of the indoor environment, benefiting to health, wellbeing and productivity of its occupants, promoting, encourage energy-efficient buildings, systems and equipment.
Integral to the new headquarters' design is the lighting scheme, which was developed by Ryder Architecture and implemented by lighting design expert Scott Terry of Light Realization. The lighting throughout the building has been carefully curated to not only create a visually striking aesthetic but also to optimize the indoor environmental quality and support the productivity of the WKCDA's employees.
The lobby showcases a striking beamed hollow stair ceiling that leads to the main reception area and the offices on the upper floors. CETTiGA's Ying Series Downlights and LunaRay's office-specific Linear Profiles System have been installed between the beams, illuminating the entire entrance and creating a warm, welcoming ambiance.
"The lighting design was a critical component in ensuring the new headquarters met our sustainability and functionality goals," said Terry. "By strategically placing the CETTiGA and LunaRay fixtures, we were able to achieve the desired aesthetic while also minimizing glare and maintaining an optimal level of illumination throughout the workspace."
In the office areas, the same CETTiGA Ying Series Downlights and LunaRay Recessed Linear Profiles have been installed, with a focus on reducing glare and maintaining a comfortable, UGR19-compliant lighting environment. These high-performance fixtures not only enhance the visual appeal of the workspace but also contribute to the overall well-being of the WKCDA's employees.
